“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love” —1 John 4:18 NIV

Does fear consume you? Are you desperate for the keys to living a fear-free life? Do you often find yourself motivated by fear instead of being motivated by joy?

We are not meant to live in fear. We are meant to live in the presence of God where perfect love exists. God created the earth perfectly. He created man purely and in his own image. Fear didn’t exist in the beginning until deception came in.

Recall, if you will, from Genesis 3:10 the first thing Adam and Eve did after they ate of the forbidden fruit—they were afraid, for the first time, and thus they hid from God. They were ashamed. Fear is linked to deception and fear is linked to shame. All of these new emotions and new reactions all from one simple deception, the introduction of doubt from the crafty serpent, Satan planting that initial seed of doubt—did God really say?

Before the cross God’s people were bound to fear. They were governed by the law and were obligated to keep every command of the law less they be guilty of breaking the whole thing. They were essentially slaves to the fear of failure—failure of keeping every command written in the law. The desire of God’s heart, which was that they could choose to serve Him out of love and joy verses obligation and fear, was lost on them because of the massive chasm sin created. But when Jesus came He fulfilled every last righteous requirement of the law and ushered in a new way bridging the gap between the Father and us. Now a way has been made for us to come boldly before the throne of grace confidently approaching the Father with reverence and joy.

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” —John 14:6 NIV
