“Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, ‘Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!’ He replied, ‘You of little faith, why are you so afraid?’ Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.” — Matthew 8:23-26

The disciples were amazed that Jesus could sleep during such a violent storm. As the storm picked up the disciples feared for their lives. Franticly they woke Jesus crying out, “Lord save us!!” They were terrified for their life. Even before He calmed the storm Jesus questioned his disciples, Why are you so afraid?

Then He went out and calmed the storm.

As I read this I think to myself, if only the disciples had realized who was with them. It was only after Jesus brought calm to the storm that they grew more curious,

“The men were amazed and asked, ‘What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!’” (vs.27)

Had they realized who was with them all along they would have had no need to fear. They could have rested in a truth that we now know today, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31.

Jesus was with them in the boat. Full of peace because He knew who was with Him, the Father. Jesus had no reason to fear.

“He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.” Psalm 107:29

FRIEND, Never forget who is with you. Walking with you through life. Through every trial and every storm. Jesus is there. You are not alone. As followers of Christ, we aren’t meant to have peace at the end of the storm—when it’s over and all is calm. Anyone can have peace then! As believers, we are meant to have peace during the storm! Right in the middle of it. When the wind is raging and the waves are rising all around us! That’s when believers can obtain peace. Jesus is the anchor for our soul. Our peace in times of trouble. This is the testimony of Jesus operating in the life of the believer. Our ability to have peace right in the middle of the chaos.

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27

TODAY: Remember that Jesus is always with you and allow the peace that He gives to refresh and water your soul.
